WhatsApp now lets people without accounts join calls

WhatsApp has introduced guest calling, letting people without an account join voice and video calls through a web browser.

The feature supports individual and group calls with up to 32 participants, and requires host approval before guests can join.

The update extends WhatsApp calling beyond registered users, removing the need for every participant to have an account. The company says guest calls are free, end-to-end encrypted, and have no time limits.

WhatsApp is also preparing integrations with Google and Outlook calendars. Those additions are scheduled to roll out later this year, allowing users to attach WhatsApp calls to calendar invitations.

Joining through a browser

To invite someone, a WhatsApp user opens the Calls tab, selects the “+” icon, creates a call link, and shares it with the intended participants. Creating these links still requires a WhatsApp account.

Recipients without an account can open the invitation link in a browser on their computer and enter their name. They are then placed in a waiting room until the host approves their request to join.

This gives hosts control over who enters a call, including when someone else has been passed an invitation link. Hosts can also remove guests at any point during the session.

Once admitted, guests can use several collaboration features available during calls. These include sharing their computer screen, sending emoji reactions, and raising a hand to indicate that they want to speak.

Browser access could make WhatsApp calls more practical for meetings, tutoring sessions, or conversations with people who don’t use the service.

Another scenario is allowing people with a WhatsApp account on a shared computer to join meetings without logging in.

Guest access has limits

WhatsApp places several restrictions on guest participants. They cannot see other participants’ phone numbers, send messages, or directly add more people to the call.

Together with the waiting room and removal controls, these restrictions limit what someone joining through a shared link can access or do. The company says end-to-end encryption also applies to guest calls.

The forthcoming calendar integrations will require users to install a WhatsApp plugin and connect their account. They can then add a WhatsApp call link to a Google or Outlook calendar invitation, and invitees can participate regardless of whether they have a WhatsApp account.

For users trying guest calling now, start by creating a call link in WhatsApp. Hosts should check the names in the waiting room before admitting participants, particularly when sharing links with a larger group.
